City of Pittston Awarded $700K in State Funding

We are pleased to announce that thanks to the hard work of Rep. Jim Haddock and Senator Marty Flynn, the City of Pittston and City of Pittston Redevelopment Authority have received the following funds for the listed projects:

Pittston City Redevelopment Authority — $500,000 to construct an office building to house the Redevelopment Authority and Housing Authority in Pittston. In 2021, the RDA and HA began the process of consolidating staff and services, however, the two authorities have separate office locations. To improve functionality, efficiency, and public access, the project will construct modern offices for the co-location of both authorities. The main offices on the second floor will include four offices, a boardroom, reception area, a “bullpen area” for cubicles, restrooms, kitchen and related items. Additional office space will be constructed at the rear of the first floor for future growth or related entities and a file storage will be constructed in the basement.
Pittston City — $200,000 on behalf of Lincoln Heights Corp., to be used toward replacing deteriorated, single-pane windows with new energy-efficient windows at the Lincoln Heights Senior Housing Facility. Deteriorated asphalt sidewalks along the building’s frontage will also be replaced.

Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program

Staff members from The City of Pittston scanned locations around the downtown area for cigarette litter as part of a grant awarded to the city by the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. Over 1,000 cigarette butts and cigar tips were collected from streets, sidewalks, and grass. The waste will be recycled via TerraCycle, a facility that focuses on recycling items that require a special process. Standing cigarette butt receptacles will be placed at locations where a large amount of cigarette waste was identified, and future scans will be conducted over the next 12 months.

Help Reduce Mosquito-Borne Illness

Mosquito season has started early this year in Luzerne County. The consistent rain throughout the winter/early spring has created an overabundance of standing water, supporting heavy mosquito larvae populations. The recent warm weather has sped up the mosquitos’ life cycle and adult mosquitos are now starting to emerge. Please remember to keep yourself and others safe by repairing screens, eliminating standing water, and wearing proper insect repellent when outside! If you would like to report a mosquito complaint, please contact Luzerne County’s Mosquito Disease Control program at 570-674-7991 ext. 6 or send emails to mdc@luzernecd.org.
